Chapter Five

As Noel gazed upon Santa Claus and little Allison, something overwhelmingly powerful jolted through every muscle and nerve in her body. Tears stung her eyes as she studied the smile that stretched from ear to ear on her sweet face. With everything Allison had been through, never had a day gone by that she didn’t smile. But this smile, the one with the promise of hope, seemed brighter and almost magical.

Jolly Saint Nick had given her a moment of joy with something as small as a toy, and if anything ever made her second guess her resentment toward Christmas, it was seeing the power of love that surrounded these children and their families.

Wiping away the fallen tear, she swallowed hard. Her heart sank in her chest as the impending loss took hold of her. She shook her head as if to clear away the burning ache and troubling thoughts. It didn’t work. She hated that Allison was fighting for a life she should have, but couldn’t.

She spun on her heels and moved to stand behind the large curtain that separated the banquet rooms. She couldn’t contain her tears. Sadness and regret robbed her of breath.

How ridiculous she had been to throw her life away because of self-inflicted guilt. Allison fought to live, to experience all that life had to offer, and all Noel had done was shut herself off from the world—from love.

Yes, she was the reason Claire had been on that mountain when the avalanche came crashing down upon them. But like Allison, Claire was making her life better, she was living the life she was given. Noel still hadn’t figured out how to do that. Regret and shame had stopped her and she didn’t know how to escape the feelings that imprisoned her.

“Are you all right, young lady?” a deep, rumbling voice asked.

With the backs of her hands, she quickly wiped her damp cheeks and turned to face Santa. His grey eyes sparkled like diamonds as she studied his jovial smile. “Yes. Thank you.”

She tried to move around him, but he caught her arm. The connection had her breath catching in her lungs. As is fingers caressed the skin on her arms, something sparked between them. She slowly pulled her arm away, eyeing him with a deep curiosity.

“I’ve got something for you.”

“For me?” She narrowed her eyes, wondering what he would have for her. What would he possibly have that she would want or need?

She thought she heard him chuckle in that traditional jovial laughter Santa used as he began digging into his red toy sack. Slowly, he pulled out a manila envelope and handed it to her. “Merry Christmas, Noel,” he said with a wink, moving back to be with the children.

Stunned, she stared after the plump man who instantly made her think of Luke. The way he gazed at her with his hypnotic grey eyes and the electric connection that pulsed between them had her thoughts wandering in the direction of a sexy pro hockey player—a man she couldn’t seem to stop thinking about.
